North West Pacific Projects (NZMFAT)

Keith Scoles provided design and commissioning support for the 1.7 MWp of solar-PV / hybrid power systems across five sites in the north-west Pacific countries of Nauru, Pohnpei, Marshall Islands and Palau. These systems range from a 1.1 MW solar farm in Nauru, to a 65 kWp / 165 Wh solar+battery mini-grid in the village in Kayangel, Palau - serving a population of approximately 54 people.

Tuvalu Energy Sector Project

Keith Scoles reviewed the design of Tuvalu's existing diesel powered electricity generation systems and supporting infrastructure, assessing its suitability for integration into a new hybrid power system. The project included 770 kW of Solar PV and 1 MWh of battery storage, as well as upgrades to the existing power station controls, allowing renewable energy generation capacity to be added in the future. By elevating the equipment above projected flood levels, the system escapes rising sea levels. Funded by the World Bank and completed in late 2020, the project became Tuvalu’s largest solar and battery storage asset.

Tonga Renewable Energy Projects (TREP 01 and 02)

Keith Scoles was the Technical Adviser and Integration Support Engineer for the design and integration of two grid stability, battery energy storage systems at Popua Power Station, Tongatapu (7.2 MW / 5.3 MWh and 6 MW / 24 MWh). In this role Keith reviewed and gave advice on the design of these systems, including risk assessment and responsibility for integration of these batteries into the existing diesel and PV systems. Included creating an xl model supporting daily performance of systems using existing load profiles.
